The Corner Shop

The shop never changes, so the vocabulary has nowhere to hide. Twenty-five self-contained stories share one shop, one till, and a cast of regulars who never leave, so the words for buying eggs or making change come back again and again, each time in a new situation. Built for learners from true beginner through intermediate, with real branching choices in nearly every story. Start anywhere — the shop will still be there when you come back.

Language & Script Guide

What is Mandarin?

Mandarin is the official language of Mainland China and Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore. It is the most widely spoken Chinese dialect globally.

What is Cantonese?

Cantonese is the primary language spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, and the Guangdong province of China. It is also widely spoken in overseas Chinese communities.

What is Simplified Chinese?

Simplified Chinese characters were created to increase literacy rates by reducing the number of strokes. They are officially used in Mainland China and Singapore.

What is Traditional Chinese?

Traditional Chinese characters retain their historical shapes and strokes. They are primarily used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Which should I choose?

If you plan to visit Mainland China or want to speak with the largest number of people, choose Mandarin + Simplified. If you are interested in Hong Kong culture, media, or visiting Macau, choose Cantonese + Traditional.
