The Moon Across the Ages
The club embarks on a cross-period journey to study the most enduring icon of Chinese literature: the moon. Over ten lessons, they build the cultural framework of the empire across multiple dynasties. They examine how the anonymous travelers of the Han Dynasty used the moon to measure physical distance, how the Daoist outcasts of the Tang Dynasty used it as an escape hatch from the brutal imperial examinations, and how the exiled scholar-officials of the Song Dynasty finally learned to use it to accept the flawed, impermanent nature of human society.
The evolution of the moon as a literary motif, tracking how shifting political structures transformed it from a geographic compass into a mirror for isolation, and finally into a symbol of philosophical acceptance.
