Women Writing Women
The club explores how the physical and architectural boundaries placed on women in ancient China directly resulted in their absence from the literary archive. Over ten lessons, they read the brutal economic reality of marriage in the ancient 'Shijing', analyze the lethal palace politics behind Consort Ban's 'Autumn Fan', and dissect why male scholar-officials co-opted the female voice to complain about their own careers. Finally, they look at Qing dynasty poet Nalan Xingde, experiencing the rare phenomenon of a powerful man writing with genuine domestic vulnerability.
The systemic erasure of female authors in classical China, contrasting genuine female voices from the Shijing and Ban Jieyu against the male-authored 'Boudoir Lament' tradition.
