Night
The club explores the evolution of the nighttime aesthetic in Chinese literature. Over ten lessons, they build the severe sociopolitical reality of the Tang Dynasty's urban curfews, explaining why early night poetry is drenched in profound isolation. They read Zhang Ji's auditory masterpiece of a moored boat, and Du Mu's cynical observation of a decaying empire under the cover of dark. Finally, they cross into the Song Dynasty, where the abolition of the curfew allows Su Shi to transform the night into a shared space of quiet, philosophical freedom.
A cross-period thematic exploration of night in classical Chinese literature, shifting from a state-enforced prison of isolation in the Tang Dynasty to a philosophical sanctuary in the Song.
