The Feeling of Spring
The reading club forms and begins its foundational journey into classical poetry. Over eighteen lessons, they dissect seven poems about spring. They start in the Han Dynasty with the anonymous heartbreak of 'Green, Green Riverbank Grass', unpack the deceptive simplicity of Meng Haoran's 'Spring Dawn', and navigate Tao Yuanming's dangerous political retreat. They experience Wang Wei's absolute acoustic stillness, transition to the philosophical metaphors of Song Dynasty thinkers Ye Shaoweng and Zhu Xi, and end by confronting the weight of fallen empires with Du Mu. Through this, the members define their unique analytical voices.
An exploration of classical Chinese poetry through the lens of spring, moving from Han Dynasty folk laments to Tang Dynasty aesthetic mastery and Song Dynasty philosophical observation.
